Now I can’t take the full credit for this pinwheels recipe. I saw these Hot Ham and Cheese Roll Ups on Facebook and shared it to the My Heavenly Recipes Facebook page.
I remembered the general ingredients for the pinwheels recipe and went ahead and “winged it” because that’s just what I do. So the original recipe is from Kevin and Amanda. Be sure to stop by their site and check them out if you don’t already!
In Kevin & Amanda’s roll ups recipe, they used poppy seeds & butter….I’m not one for butter unless it’s absolutely necessary. This wasn’t one of those times. As I am laid up with this foot surgery I don’t need any extra calories. Because I’ll have to work that much harder once I am cleared to walk and do workouts again!
I don’t like extra work either!
Now can you think of anything better than hot ham & cheese? OK that’s probably not a very good question to ask…but, these pinwheel appetizers are pretty damn good.
NO! Scratch that — These Grey Poupon Ham and Cheese Roll Ups are AMAZING. So amazing in fact, my Husband had more of these rollups than I can count. 😉
If you say that you aren’t a cook – you are wrong! You can totally whip up these roll ups. They don’t take any fancy schmancy ingredients. In fact, my husband made this pinwheels recipe over Christmas break – ya know, since I can’t even stand for longer than 2 minutes….
Now you can totally substitute out the lunch meat for ham if you prefer. You can add a little bit of pepperoni, salami, cheese, thinly sliced tomatoes and even a dash of italian dressing or Garlic Expressions. I’ll be making this Italian roll up version in the coming weeks, so stay tuned for that recipe.

You could also try freezing the pinwheels unbaked, but be careful of the grated cheese coming loose. Baking the pinwheels first, then freezing, is the easiest route. Store leftovers at room temperature for up to 3 days.
The flavor gets better as they chill! Feel free to make them up to 3 days in advance. Freezer: These freeze like a dream! Wrap in a double layer of plastic wrap and freeze for up to 1 month.
Add your favorite fruits, veggies, nuts, cheeses, and sweet treats into your lunch box and snack on them during the day for some much-needed variety. We like to add something substantial too, which is why this box includes a delicious pinwheel with garlic aioli!
Pinwheels made too far in advance can become dry or the flavours may not be as vibrant. Solution: If made ahead of time, store the rolls wrapped in plastic in the refrigerator and slice just before serving to keep them fresh on the inside.
Let them rise about partway — until just starting to puff, but not ready to bake. At this point, freeze the rolls on their baking sheet for a few hours. Once they're frozen solid, you can transfer the unbaked rolls to a freezer bag or container.
Therefore, I put it in the freezer for approximately 20 minutes. Following this, my homemade fruit roll ups became crunchy, just like the store-bought ones. The reason why homemade fruit roll ups require an additional freezing step is due to their thickness.
Tortillas are one of the most freezer-friendly baked goods out there: As long as they're properly wrapped, they'll maintain their flavor and texture excellently for up to 6 months. Even better, they're easy and speedy to defrost once you're ready to use them.
You can also freeze corn tortillas and it's just as easy as with flour tortillas. Cut small pieces of parchment paper or wax paper. Separate the tortillas. Layer the pieces of parchment paper between the tortillas as you stack them back up.
It's so easy to learn how to make pinwheel sandwiches. Just lay your preferred fillings onto the wrapper of your choice, roll up, chill, slice, skewer, and serve. You can also microwave the pastry wrapped in paper towel for 15 seconds on each side to speed up the thawing process. You can make a homemade puff pastry recipe, use store-bought, or even use pie dough to make pinwheels.
You must wait for the cooked egg rolls to completely cool down before you store them in a refrigerator or freezer. Once the cooked egg rolls have cooled down, wrap them with cling film tightly. Place the wrapped egg rolls in a plastic bag and freeze. Reheat the egg rolls in the oven or fry again without thawing.
Home Freezing: Freeze on day of purchase. Consume within 1 month. To defrost thaw overnight in your fridge or alternatively for 2 hours at room temperature. Once thawed do not refreeze.
